This week witnessed a flurry of activity among ministers and bureaucrats as the scale of India’s economic crisis has, hopefully, begun to sink in. The slowdown in economic momentum is not just on account of extraordinary disruptions over the last year, including the transition to GST. The fact is the slowdown preceded November’s demonetisation announcement. The emphasis on economic revival through a package of measures is welcome. But Band Aids will not suffice any longer. GDP growth of 5.7% in April-June, the slowest rate of growth in three years, encapsulates the state of the economy.. (Times of India)

Today, we observe the 49th anniversary of the historic one day strike by the central government employees of India on 19, September 1968. Next year it will be the 50th anniversary! After half a century, when I look back many vivid pictures come to my mind. I am really a product of that one day’s strike.

The main demand for the strike was “Need Based Minimum Wage.” Nobody talks about that demand now.13 working people – mainly from Railways – were brutally murdered on that day.Nobody talks about them now.

More than 50,000 workers were dismissed or terminated. It was the dress rehearsal for Emergency declared seven years later. For political reasons, Kerala became the major target of attack.Maximum employees were dismissed, terminated, suspended and transferred to far away places in Kerala. We struggled for three years facing all types of victimization.

Some leaders surrendered, not the workers. We became stronger like steel.

On this day, I can not resist recollecting those experiences. But I do not want to narrate everything here. Time has passed. Time has solved many problems.

STILL, ONE THOUGHT.

IF A WORKER REFUSES TO WORK FOR A DAY SAYING THE WAGES YOU GIVE HIM IS NOT SUFFICIENT CAN YOU CALL THE POLICE AND GET HIM ARRESTED? NO. NO RULES PERMIT THAT.

BUT IF THE GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES REFUSE TO WORK FOR A DAY SAYING THE WAGES ARE NOT SATISFACTORY THEY CAN BE ARRESTED, TERMINATED, MURDERED EVEN. THEY ARE BOUND BY RULES AND REGULATIONS.

THIS IS OUR INDIA.

n September 1965, the Chief of Air Staff was summoned to the Defence Minister's office. Pakistan was targetting the vital town of Akhnoor in Jammu and Kashmir as part of Operation Grand Slam. The army needed air support. The government needed to know how quickly the Indian Air Force would be ready for operations. Air Force Chief Arjan Singh replied in his characteristic nonchalance, "...in an hour".

Sixty minutes later, the Air Force was pounding Pakistan's armoured formations.

After few initial setbacks, the Indian Air Force outmaneuvered and outdid the Pakistan Air Force handing India air superiority to the ground forces. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan for his leadership during the 1965 war and the Air Chief's rank upgraded to that of Air Chief Marshal, the first Indian to hold the rank.

But the man who is considered a legend had any firsts to his credit.

Born in April 1919 when the First World War was ending, Arjan Singh was battle ready by the time the Second World War broke out. By the time the War was over, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross for successfully leading his squadron through many operations on the Burma front. On 15 August 1947, Arjan Singh had the unique honour of leading the fly-past of more than a 100 air force aircraft over the Red Fort in Delhi. Active for years after he retired in July 1969, Arjan Singh served as Ambassador to Switzerland and High Commissioner to Kenya. Many years later, between 1989 and 1990, he was Delhi's Lt Governor.

In recognition of his extraordinary contribution, the government conferred the rank of the Marshal of the Air Force onto Arjan Singh in January 2002. He was the only 5 star-ranked officer to survive since the death of the hero of 1971 Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw in 2008.

THE MARSHAL HAS RETIRED FROM LIFE. WE JOIN ENTIRE INDIANS AND SALUTE HIM....
